Mountain Peak in Engadin
Ca. 1909
Fritz Overbeck transports us straight to the rugged Swiss Engadin valley in this striking landscape from around 1909. Notice how the thick, energetic brushstrokes bring the massive, mossy boulders in the foreground to life, creating a dramatic contrast with the jagged, snow-dusted peak piercing the textured blue sky above. As a German Impressionist, Overbeck cared less about photographic precision and more about capturing the raw, atmospheric mood of the wild outdoors. He frequently sought out these remote alpine locations to escape the city, bottling up a sense of quiet, majestic isolation for us to enjoy today.
