Farmstead in Weyermoor by Fritz Overbeck, 1900

Peeking through a screen of tall, slender tree trunks, we get a glimpse of a rustic thatched-roof farmhouse nestled in the German countryside. Fritz Overbeck, a key member of the famous Worpswede artist colony, captured this scene in 1900 using loose, expressive brushstrokes that bring the dappled sunlight and earthy greens to life. Instead of painting in stuffy studios, Overbeck and his bohemian friends trekked out into the moors to capture the raw, unpolished beauty of rural life, forever changing the landscape of German Impressionism.
