Bijutsukai Pl.232
1901
Published in the art magazine 'Bijutsukai' in 1901, this playful design by Furuya Kōrin bursts with the energy of the Rinpa revival. Three large, fan-shaped wedges cut through a dreamy background of swirling blue clouds and delicate brown vines dotted with berries. Inside these geometric slices, we see quirky, almost surreal vignettes: a building with a bold blue door, a mysterious purple object that looks like a giant shoe, and a grid-like structure puffing out smoke. Kōrin was famous for modernizing traditional Japanese designs, mixing classic nature patterns with bold, graphic shapes that feel surprisingly Art Nouveau for the turn of the century.
