Bijutsukai Pl.93
1901
Furuya Kōrin, a master of the Meiji period's 'Rinpa revival,' created this stunning plate for the influential art magazine *Bijutsukai* in 1901. Notice how the large, ruffled flowers—resembling morning glories—pop in creamy white and pale green against that intense, swirling indigo background? It’s a classic Rinpa technique: bold, flat colors and decorative patterns that make the image look almost like a luxury kimono fabric. By naming himself after the legendary Edo artist Ogata Kōrin, Furuya signaled his mission to bring that bold, naturalistic style back into the modern age.
