Peasant with a Hoe
c. 1882
Long before he became famous for his tiny dots, Georges Seurat was painting the gritty reality of rural labor with bold, chunky brushstrokes. In this early work from around 1882, a peasant is bent double over his hoe, his figure almost melting into the dappled sunlight and deep shadows of the field. It's a fantastic snapshot of the artist's evolution, showing exactly how he was experimenting with light and color just before inventing the Pointillism technique that would change art history forever.
