Rain at Yabakei by Hashiguchi Goyō, 1918

Hashiguchi Goyō captures a gloomy, rainy day in this stunning woodblock print from 1918, part of the shin-hanga (new prints) movement that revitalized traditional Japanese art. You can almost feel the damp chill as travelers huddle under umbrellas near a cart, while delicate vertical lines streak across the sky to simulate a heavy downpour over the Yabakei gorge. Unlike the bold, flat colors of older ukiyo-e prints, Goyō used subtle shading and realistic perspective to create a moody, atmospheric landscape that feels almost photographic. He was known for his obsession with beauty, often using the same model for his famous 'woman looking in a mirror' prints!
