Rocky landscape
1650 - 1682
Jacob van Ruisdael, the master of moody Dutch landscapes, takes us on a trip to a rugged, rocky terrain that doesn't actually exist in the famously flat Netherlands! He likely imagined this dramatic scene, combining a cozy half-timbered cottage perched precariously on a cliff with a rushing stream and a brooding, cloud-filled sky. It's a perfect example of how Baroque artists loved to inject emotion and drama into nature, making the viewer feel small against the power of the elements. Despite never traveling far from home, Ruisdael became the greatest landscape painter of his time by mastering this kind of atmospheric storytelling.
