Una rosa

Jan van Huysum

Una rosa by Jan van Huysum

Jan van Huysum was the rockstar of Dutch flower painting in the 18th century, famously refusing to let anyone watch him work to protect his secret techniques! This intimate study of a pink rose showcases his Baroque attention to detail, from the delicate, ruffled petals to the sharp, menacing thorns on the stem. Notice the leaf on the right that looks a bit chewed up? He loved painting nature realistically, imperfections and all, rather than just making it look perfect.
