A Roman Slave Market by Jean-Léon Gérôme, ca 1884

Jean-Léon Gérôme drops us into the middle of a grim ancient Roman auction. A young woman stands vulnerable on a wooden platform, her back to us as she ties up her hair, while a merchant in a vibrant red toga gestures enthusiastically to the crowd. Surrounding her are men in togas—some raising hands to bid, others looking on with skepticism. Gérôme was a leader of the Academic art movement, known for hyper-realistic precision that looked almost like a photograph. He often used historical settings like ancient Rome as a loophole to paint nude figures, which might have been censored in a contemporary setting. Interestingly, the Impressionists later despised this polished style, calling it soulless, but today we admire the incredible detail.
