Landscape Forms, Delaware County, Pennsylvania, no. 2
1916
John Marin took a trip to Delaware County, Pennsylvania in 1916 and decided to completely shatter the traditional landscape. Instead of a pretty, realistic view, he used energetic watercolor washes to break the rolling hills and trees into jagged, vibrating fragments of blue, green, and purple. As a pioneer of American modernism, Marin believed that nature was full of explosive energy, and he wanted his brushstrokes to capture that exact feeling. You can almost see the wind blowing through the composition, making the solid ground feel like it's constantly shifting and dancing right before your eyes.
