Chalet, Breithorn, Mürren
1870
Believe it or not, John Singer Sargent painted this majestic Alpine scene when he was only 14 years old! During a family trip to Switzerland in 1870, the young artist captured two rustic wooden chalets huddled against the towering, snow-capped peaks of the Breithorn. Even at this early age, his talent is obvious—he uses loose, atmospheric washes to create the misty mountains and sharp, dark strokes for the timber cabins. It’s a fantastic example of his academic training meeting a love for nature, long before he became the high-society portrait painter we know today.
