岩の海岸 by John Singer Sargent, circa 1875

Long before he became the go-to painter for Gilded Age elites, a teenage John Singer Sargent was busy sketching rugged coastlines like this around 1875. The scene is dominated by dark, heavily textured cliffs that seem to crumble right into the pale, wash-like sea, with a tiny sailboat barely visible in the distance. You can really feel the scratchy energy of his drawing hand here, building up those dramatic rocky forms with dark, grainy strokes. It’s a fantastic, raw glimpse into how the master trained his eye for light and atmosphere long before he picked up his famous oil brushes.
