Powerful Figure

Powerful Figure by Julio González, 1940

Julio González was a master of turning cold, hard iron into something that looked almost alive, and this 1940 sketch is a perfect glimpse into his wild imagination. Signed 'J.G.' at the bottom, this drawing looks like a blueprint for a mechanical monster, featuring jagged, claw-like shapes and rounded forms that seem ready to be forged in metal. González was actually the guy who taught Picasso how to weld, so you can see the Cubist influence in how he breaks the figure down into geometric, interlocking parts. The scribbly background adds a sense of nervous energy, as if this 'powerful personage' is vibrating with potential energy before being hammered into existence.
