Cabeza cubista
1940
Julio González was actually a master metalworker who taught Picasso how to weld, and you can see that sculptural thinking in this 1940 drawing. Titled 'Tête cubiste,' the piece looks less like a soft human face and more like a geometric mask forged from iron or stone. The sharp angles and heavy black cross-hatching give it a tough, armored appearance, reflecting the harsh reality of creating art in Europe during the early years of World War II. It’s a brilliant example of how Cubist artists tried to show multiple viewpoints of an object at once, flattening 3D forms onto paper.
