Akt XI
1806
Hokusai captures the chaotic climax of the famous 'Chushingura' story, where forty-seven loyal samurai storm a mansion to avenge their master. You can see the attackers scaling ladders and swarming the courtyard, their blue uniforms contrasting sharply with the pink walls of the building. One warrior on the roof holds a lantern bearing the character for 'loyalty,' signaling their righteous cause. This woodblock print brings the drama of Kabuki theater to life with Hokusai's signature dynamic composition, freezing a moment of intense action right before the final blow.
