Self-Portrait (Selbstbildnis) III

Self-Portrait (Selbstbildnis) III by Lovis Corinth, 1920

Created in 1920, this scratchy, energetic self-portrait shows Lovis Corinth in a fedora, looking almost like a rugged character from a film noir. After suffering a severe stroke in 1911, Corinth's style shifted dramatically from polished realism to this wild, expressive manner, where the frantic lines seem to vibrate with raw emotion. He was obsessed with his own image, producing over 50 self-portraits in his final decade alone, essentially using his aging face as a laboratory to test his evolving artistic vision.
