Omhelzing
1915
Lovis Corinth created this intense embrace in 1915, right in the middle of World War I. The couple is locked together, but it doesn't look like a peaceful hug—the man's face is contorted in anguish while the woman buries her face in his neck. This raw, scratchy style is classic Expressionism, where raw feelings matter more than realistic looks. Corinth had suffered a stroke a few years earlier, which actually made his art wilder and more emotional, turning his physical struggle into powerful, gritty prints.
