Sankt Christophorus by Martin Schongauer, 1475-80

Look at this giant wading through the water, his massive staff planted firmly for balance! This is St. Christopher, the ultimate patron saint of travelers, captured in a masterful engraving by Martin Schongauer. According to legend, he was tasked with carrying people across a dangerous river, but one day a small child asked for a ride. As they crossed, the child grew impossibly heavy—because Christopher was actually carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders! Schongauer was such a rockstar of the Northern Renaissance that a young Albrecht Dürer reportedly traveled just to meet him, and you can see why: the intricate lines and dramatic drapery here are absolutely breathtaking.
