Margot, descansando os braços no encosto da poltrona by Mary Cassatt, circa 1903

Mary Cassatt, the only American to exhibit with the French Impressionists, had a special soft spot for capturing the quiet, unposed moments of childhood. Here, she sketches a young girl named Margot, one of her favorite models, leaning casually over the back of an armchair with a look of dreamy distraction. The loose, energetic strokes give the portrait a sense of immediacy, as if Cassatt caught Margot mid-thought before she could pose properly. It’s a perfect example of how Impressionists valued fleeting, everyday moments over stiff, formal portraits.
