Het duel
Imagine a medieval tournament frozen in time, painted with the dreamy haze of a legend. Nicholas Roerich captures two armored knights charging at each other, their lances locked in a deadly embrace. The scene is dominated by cool, mystical blues, with a ghostly castle looming in the background like a memory of a past age. As a key figure in the Symbolist movement, Roerich wasn't interested in gritty realism; he wanted to show the spiritual weight of ancient Russian folklore. Notice how the horses—one deep blue, the other golden—almost look like stained glass, adding a magical quality to this epic duel.
