Pavoncella e canna
1900 - 1930
Meet the Northern Lapwing, looking rather dapper with its long, wispy head crest in this delicate print by Ohara Koson. Koson was an absolute master of kacho-e (bird-and-flower pictures), designing over 400 bird prints during his career, and his works were hugely popular in the West! Notice how the bird seems to be balancing carefully amidst the tall, swaying reeds—it captures a fleeting moment of nature with incredible precision. This piece is a classic example of the shin-hanga (new print) movement, which revived traditional Japanese woodblock printing for modern audiences in the early 20th century.
