Zittende figuur by Oskar Schlemmer, 1929

Oskar Schlemmer, a teacher at the legendary Bauhaus school, was obsessed with turning humans into geometric shapes, and this 1929 'Sitzende' (Seated Woman) is a perfect example. Instead of painting a realistic portrait, he created a figure that looks like a porcelain doll or an architectural column, complete with a stark black choker and vibrant, fiery red hair. He believed the human form was the ultimate measure of space, so he stripped away the messy details of real life to leave us with this serene, puppet-like woman sitting in a world of strict vertical lines.
