Sables d'Olonne

Paul Signac

Sables d'Olonne by Paul Signac

Paul Signac sketched this breezy harbor scene in Sables-d'Olonne on April 21st, likely capturing the fishing boats resting on the sand during one of his coastal sailing trips. Instead of his famous tiny dots of color (pointillism), he used loose, energetic ink lines and watery washes of blue and brown to bring the docked ships to life. The scribbled clouds and tilted masts give the whole piece a wonderful sense of movement, making you feel like you're standing right there on the quay waiting for the tide to turn.
