사이먼 로바트 경
1746
William Hogarth captured the infamous Jacobite rebel Simon Fraser, 11th Lord Lovat, sitting in the Tower of London just before his execution. The Scottish lord looks remarkably jolly for a man awaiting the axe, slumped in a chair with a mischievous, almost toad-like grin that Hogarth masterfully exaggerated. This etching is famous because Hogarth actually drew it from life while visiting Lovat in prison, turning a traitor into a grotesque but hilarious caricature. It remains a brilliant example of 18th-century political satire, proving that even the most serious criminals could be mocked before they met their end.
