Li Gonglin
Master of Song figure painting
Li Gonglin (1049–1106), courtesy name Boshi, also known as Longmian Jushi(龙眠居士) and Longmian Shanren(龙眠山人), was from Shuzhou during the Northern Song Dynasty (today's Tongcheng in Anhui, though some say Shucheng in Anhui). He passed the imperial examination in the third year of Xining (1070), although some sources say it was in the sixth year of Yuan You (1091). Li Gonglin had a wide range in painting, excelling in Daoist and Buddhist subjects, figures, horses, palaces, landscapes, flowers, birds, and more, and he was particularly skilled at copying. His surviving works include "Five Horses," "Imitation of Wei Yan’s Herding Scene," "Vimalakirti Teaching" (attributed), "Painting of the Removed Helmet" (attributed), and "Sages" (Southern Song stone-reproduced version), among others.
