Scroll of the Descent of Spirits at Mount Hua (Complete) Silk scroll 26.5x582
Li Gonglin, a Song Dynasty master, was famous for his 'bai miao' or plain line drawing style, and this massive scroll is a stunning example of his skill. Stretching nearly six meters long, it depicts the majestic procession of the deity of Mount Hua (the Western Peak), featuring swirling clouds, horses, and a vast entourage of attendants rendered in delicate, almost ghostly ink lines. Instead of using bold colors, the artist relied on the sheer precision of his brushwork to bring this spiritual journey to life, making the figures look like they are floating through a misty, ancient dreamscape.
