Christ taken captive
c. 1515
Albrecht Altdorfer crammed an incredible amount of drama into this woodcut, part of his famous 'Small Passion' series from around 1515. Look closely at the top center—that glowing dove represents the Holy Spirit watching over the chaotic scene where soldiers roughly seize Christ. The 'AA' monogram in the top right corner is Altdorfer's signature, marking this as a masterpiece of the Northern Renaissance where every single line adds to the frantic energy of the arrest.
