Susanna at her Bath
1526
Albrecht Altdorfer was absolutely obsessed with architecture, and this 1526 drawing is the ultimate proof. While the title refers to the biblical story of Susanna bathing, the real star is the gigantic, fantasy-like palace that dominates the scene. If you squint at the bottom left, you can spot the tiny figures of Susanna and the spying elders, completely dwarfed by the towering columns and intricate arches. This piece is a fantastic example of the Danube School style, where massive, dramatic backgrounds often steal the show from the human subjects.
