Nine Dragons Scroll - Painting Core 4 by Chen Rong

Chen Rong, a Southern Song Dynasty magistrate, was legendary for getting drunk and splashing ink to capture the raw, mythical power of dragons. This masterpiece, created around 1244, depicts nine dragons writhing through mist and stormy clouds, their scales detailed with incredible precision against chaotic washes of black ink. The artist used dynamic brushwork and swirling compositions to make the creatures look like they are actually moving through the paper. It's a stunning example of how traditional Chinese painting uses negative space to suggest immense energy. Today, this famous handscroll is a prized treasure at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.
