Nine Dragons Scroll (Complete Scroll), Paper, 40x180, Boston
Chen Rong painted these nine mythical beasts in 1244, and they're still causing a storm today. The dragons twist and turn through clouds and crashing waves, each one showing off a different mood—from fierce and fiery to playful and relaxed. The left half of this incredibly long scroll is packed with calligraphy, basically the medieval equivalent of Instagram comments from art lovers over the centuries. It's a stunning example of Southern Song Dynasty ink wash painting. You can find this dragon-filled masterpiece at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.
