On the Edge of the Christiania Fjord
1895
During a chilly winter trip to Norway in 1895, Monet traded his usual sunny French gardens for the icy blues of the Oslo Fjord, which was known as Christiania at the time. He captured the biting cold perfectly, using thick, textured brushstrokes to show the slushy ice clinging to the riverbanks and the pale, frosty sky hanging over the distant mountains. This frosty masterpiece is a fantastic example of Impressionism, proving that the master of light could find breathtaking, shimmering beauty even in a freezing, snow-covered landscape.
