Bathing Time at Deauville
1865
Look at that massive, brooding sky taking up almost the entire canvas! Eugène Boudin, often called the 'King of Skies,' captures the chic 19th-century beach crowd at Deauville huddled around their white bathing machines while a horse waits patiently by the water. He was painting outdoors long before the Impressionists made it famous, even mentoring a young Claude Monet who later admitted, 'If I became a painter, I owe it to Boudin.' It is a brilliant snapshot of Victorian leisure under a dramatic, cloud-filled atmosphere.
