Berk Shore, Low Tide
circa 1880-85
Eugène Boudin, often called the 'King of Skies,' captures the moody, expansive atmosphere of the French coast in this low-tide scene at Berck. Notice how the vast, cloud-filled sky dominates the composition, dwarfing the dark, grounded fishing boats and the solitary figure working in the wet sand below. Boudin was a master of painting outdoors and actually mentored a young Claude Monet, teaching him to observe the ever-changing light that would eventually define the entire Impressionist movement. His loose, rapid brushstrokes perfectly freeze a fleeting moment of coastal life before the tide rushes back in.
