Young Girl Carrying a Pumpkin
1889
Fausto Zonaro captures a moment of rustic simplicity here, featuring a barefoot young woman cradling a massive pumpkin like a precious treasure. Dressed in a simple white shift that contrasts beautifully with the deep, lush greens of the garden, she stands on a dirt path flanked by giant leaves and tall hollyhocks. Painted in 1889, this realistic piece actually predates Zonaro's most famous period as the court painter for the Ottoman Sultan in Istanbul. Just two years after painting this quiet Italian scene, he moved to Constantinople and became the official painter of the Ottoman court, shifting from rural realism to grand Orientalist spectacles.
