The Bull
1912
Franz Marc, best known for his colorful animal paintings, took a starkly different approach in this 1912 woodcut. As a key figure in the German Expressionist group Der Blaue Reiter, he often sought to capture the spiritual essence of animals. Here, stripped of his famous blues and yellows, he uses high-contrast black and white to show a bull's raw power. The animal looks like it's charging forward, its body almost shattering into dynamic geometric shapes, perfectly capturing the chaotic energy of the era just before World War I.
