Horses Resting by Franz Marc, 1911 - 1912

Franz Marc, a co-founder of the German Expressionist group Der Blaue Reiter, believed animals possessed an innocence humans had lost. In this striking woodcut, he depicts horses resting in a landscape, their bodies simplified into bold blocks of blue, white, and green. Marc famously assigned spiritual meaning to colors, viewing blue as masculine and severe, yet here it creates a sense of deep, peaceful slumber. The animals seem to melt into the earth itself, showing his desire to capture the inner soul of nature rather than just its outer appearance.
