The Shopfronts of Novelty Stores
Frédéric Bouchot captures the birth of modern window shopping in this charming 19th-century scene set in Paris. Two elegantly dressed women are completely absorbed by the display at a 'Magasin de Nouveautés' (novelty store), utterly oblivious to the dandy in the tall top hat behind them. He leans in with hands in pockets, seemingly far more interested in observing the ladies than the umbrellas and canes in the window. It's a witty snapshot of urban life, highlighting how the new department stores became stages for social observation and flirtation. Published by the famous Aubert house at the Place de la Bourse, this print pokes fun at the new public pastime of staring at shop fronts.
