(Song Dynasty Copy) Nymph of the Luo River Scroll (Volume 1) - Beginning of Scroll - Qianlong
Four bold, ink-black characters stretch across this aged scroll, serving as a royal 'stamp of approval' from the Qianlong Emperor. Reading right to left, the phrase '妙入毫顛' (Marvelous to the tip of the brush) acts as a glowing five-star review for the famous 'Nymph of the Luo River' painting that follows. Qianlong was a prolific collector who couldn't resist leaving his mark—literally—on his favorite treasures, evidenced by the red imperial seals stamped proudly on the paper. This specific piece is the frontispiece for a Song Dynasty copy of a masterpiece originally attributed to Gu Kaizhi, one of China's earliest known painters.
