Bentheim Castle
1650 - 1682
Jacob van Ruisdael took some serious artistic liberties with this dramatic landscape, transforming a real German fortress into a moody masterpiece. While the actual Burg Bentheim sits on a gentle slope, Ruisdael plopped it atop a steep, rocky mountain to make it look far more epic and imposing. The rushing stream, fallen log, and massive, brooding clouds are classic hallmarks of his Dutch Golden Age style, turning a quiet countryside scene into a romantic adventure. He actually painted several versions of this castle, proving he was quite obsessed with this specific view!
