Fluchtpunkt by James Montgomery Flagg, 1921

James Montgomery Flagg is best known for pointing a finger at you as Uncle Sam, but here he takes us on a dark adventure. Created in 1921, this scene drops us into a shadowy Indian temple where a British colonial officer in a pith helmet stares down a massive, eerie statue. Surrounded by turbaned guides, the group seems frozen in a moment of discovery or dread. The high-contrast lighting gives it a cinematic feel, perfectly capturing the pulp fiction fascination with the 'exotic' East that was popular in modernist illustration of the era.
