Abstract by Julio González, 1940

Julio González was a master of iron sculpture, and you can see that metalworking DNA in every line of this 1940 drawing. Using rich, rusty-brown ink washes, he constructs a fragmented, abstract figure that looks like a blueprint for a machine or a welded metal rod structure brought to life on paper. Created in September 1940, the initials 'J.G.' mark a moment of intense creativity during the early days of World War II. It's a perfect example of how his Cubist experiments with volume and space translated from heavy steel to delicate paper.
