Julio González, a pioneer of iron sculpture, brings his industrial grit to paper in this sketch. These four jagged, abstract heads look less like human faces and more like they’ve been welded together from scrap metal and saw blades. The sharp, zigzagging lines and geometric fragmentation are pure Cubism, but with a distinct metallic edge. González was actually Picasso’s welding teacher, and these 'Têtes' (Heads) studies reveal how he translated his 3D metal constructions into 2D drawings.
