Look closely at this bearded scholar riding his donkey across a sparse landscape—his entourage is anything but ordinary! A grotesque little demon strains at the end of a rope to pull the animal, while another impish figure trails behind lugging a heavy bundle. This is Zhong Kui, the legendary 'King of Ghosts,' depicted by the eccentric Japanese artist Kawanabe Kyōsai. Kyōsai was famous for his playful and spooky takes on folklore, and here he turns the tables: the ultimate demon hunter is being chauffeured and served by the very monsters he's supposed to be hunting. It's a witty visual pun on power, painted with quick, energetic ink brushstrokes that bring the little demons to life.
