Os Quatro Anciãos do Monte Shang e os Nove Anciãos de Huichang - Seção principal da pintura 1-2 by Li Gonglin

Panoramic and serene, this handscroll section captures a misty world where bamboo sways on rocky banks and figures traverse a calm river on a simple raft. The title reveals a fascinating historical mashup: it depicts the 'Four Elders of Shangshan' (Han dynasty hermits who refused to serve a tyrant) alongside the 'Nine Elders of Huichang' (Tang dynasty retirees led by the famous poet Bai Juyi). Li Gonglin, a Northern Song master celebrated for his elegant 'white line' technique, uses this theme to champion the literati ideal of retiring from politics to enjoy nature and friendship. The red collector seals in the corners suggest this piece was treasured by emperors, likely the Qianlong Emperor, who loved stamping his favorite art.
