Mountain Landscape by Nicolas Poussin, ca. 1635-40

Before Nicolas Poussin painted his famous orderly classical scenes, he often worked out his ideas in sketches just like this one. Created around 1635-40, this drawing bursts with energetic, scribbly lines that capture a rugged mountain landscape. You can almost feel the artist's hand moving quickly across the paper, mapping out the trees, the rocky peaks, and the little building nestled in the valley. It's a fantastic glimpse into the creative process of a Baroque master, showing how grand compositions start with simple, spontaneous strokes.
