River Landscape with Riders
1653 - 1657
Aelbert Cuyp was the master of the 'golden hour' long before photographers coined the term, and this sweeping Dutch landscape proves it. Bathed in warm, late-afternoon light, two elegantly dressed riders pause by a river while their horses take a drink, surrounded by lazily lounging cattle. This painting is a prime example of the Dutch Golden Age, where artists celebrated their own land and dramatic, cloud-filled skies rather than religious scenes. Cuyp's mastery of light was so influential that it actually inspired English landscape painters like Gainsborough and Constable over a century later.
