Salon of 1896
1896
Émile Berchmans created this vibrant poster to advertise the 1896 Salon of Fine Arts in Liège, and it is a textbook example of Belgian Art Nouveau. Notice the bold, flat areas of orange and purple, along with the stylized, flowing text that seems to dance around the elegant profile of the woman. Berchmans was a key member of an artist group called 'La Légende,' which helped popularize this decorative style in Belgium, turning everyday advertisements into collectible pieces of high art. The poster was printed by Aug. Bénard in Liège, capturing the excitement of the local art scene at the turn of the century.
