The Meadow
1881
Before he invented the famous dot-by-dot technique of Pointillism, Georges Seurat was busy capturing the quiet moods of the French countryside. Here, a vast, sweeping green meadow dominates the view, its grassy texture built from rhythmic, horizontal strokes that seem to vibrate with a cool, early morning light. To the left, a dark, brooding line of trees and faint structures contrasts sharply with the pale, hazy sky, while a lone, thin pole stands sentinel on the horizon. It’s a surprisingly lonely and atmospheric scene from an artist usually known for bustling, sun-drenched park scenes.
